Works fine on the headache rack if you have done your bonding properly. I have done this with good results, beats a mirror mount on a big truck! I agree that it's not as good as hard roof mount. However our 2 trucks set up this way, perform very well.
I ran a 108" metal whip mounted on the tool box for years with good results. Just make sure your bonding is done properly, and it will work fine. If it's a box with wings, you can mount on the top. I have had top single lid boxes that swing up, so you have to mount center rear. May have to space...
Back in the 90's had one that lasted several years, even with my homemade coil antenna. I can't remember to save my life what name it was. Haven't seen any that style in the last 10 years that's worth a crap though. They all seem to break out within a couple months.
