    Icom ID-51

This does look like a really nice radio. Just like Moleculo, I'm really starting to like D-Star now that I am getting into it. I guess I'll just give my 31A to my wife and pick up this radio for myself, lol.

    Need to test APRS messaging

I sent you one also, but doesn't your radio need to be on in order to receive a message? I'm not going to lie -- sending messages via APRS has always been cumbersome for me.

Linking a Repeater with the ID-31A

Thanks Moleculo. Thats what I thought. I ended up using the D-Star calculator but was hoping there was a method via just the radio to determine the linking repeater information. Anyway, I've had this radio for over a week now and I am really enjoying it! We have two 70cm D-Star repeaters in...

Linking a Repeater with the ID-31A

How do I link another repeater using DV mode? For example, I want to link Denver (W0CDS) to Colorado Springs (KC0CVU B). I assume I just can't select "TO:->Gateway CQ->USA West->Colorado Springs" because the call sign settings become : UR:/KC0CVUB R1:W0CDS B R2:W0CDS G MY:KC0ZPS /ID31 The UR...

    Icom ID-31a DPRS help

Thanks Moleculo. I figured it out. I guess I needed the gateway setting : UR: CQCQCQ RPT 1: W0CDS++B RPT 2: Not Use* TO : UR: CQCQCQ RPT 1: W0CDS++B RPT 2: W0CDS++G Not sure why, but it worked for me, lol.

    Icom ID-31a DPRS help

I'm trying to figure out what I am doing wrong then. I transmit to W0CDS (70 Centimeters (Usually "B" Node): 446.96250MHz -5.000). It appears to acknowledge my transmit and you can even see it on d-starusers.org: D-StarUsers.org Your Source for D-Star Digital Amateur Radio Information...

    Icom ID-31a DPRS help

I bit the bullet and decided to purchase this radio. I'm never on 70cm nor have I ever used D-Star, so this should be an experience. :) Anyway, have any of you guys manager to get DPRS (APRS) working? I'm a little confused on the setup. I set GPS TX Mode to GPS-A(DV-A) with all the...

Anyone ever use one of these?

I quickly took these videos a few minutes ago. Anyway, I'm not sure how valid these test cases are. I'm using an Olson SWR & F.S. Meter sitting about a foot away from my handheld. I kept forgetting the name of my Diamond antenna, lol. Diamond SRH940, no counterpoise: Yaesu VX-8R Diamond...

Anyone ever use one of these?

I installed a counterpoise on my VX-8R about a year ago and always leave it on now. I ran some tests with the stock antenna, a comet whip antenna, and the comet whip antenna with a counterpoise using an RF meter. The counterpoise, without a doubt, makes a difference. I should provide a video...

    Icom ID-31A Review: 440Mhz D-STAR HT

So I'll be getting my bonus here in a few days and I've really been eyeing this radio. The biggest issue for me is that its a mono-band radio. I am primarily on 2m. I currently own the Yaesu VX-8R and use the APRS functionality all the time, but I am having serious issues finding what D-Star...

    Solar charger for VX-8DR

Same here. Seems like the Nomad 7 is good for an iPhone but doesn't have enough juice for the VX-8R. Man, that's a lot of panels on the Nomad 27 version.

    Solar charger for VX-8DR

I wonder if the Amps is the problem. I can't remember where I saw the specifications, but I think the Nomad 7 only produces 12VDC@.5A where-as the Yaesu VX-8R charging cradle produces 12VDC@2A.

    Solar charger for VX-8DR

I'm not sure what I am doing wrong, but when I connect the multimeter, its reading around 13.64 Volts in full sunlight. By comparison, when plugged into my truck, its reading around 11 Volts. The charger charges while plugged into the truck, but not when using solar power. I tried to read...

    Solar charger for VX-8DR

So I got the Goal0 Nomad 7 and the 12V cigarette lighter adaptor. I am trying to charge the Yaesu VX8R using the EDC-5B car charger. Unfortunately, its not working for me. The VX8R is at around 6.1V's and I left it plugged into the solar charger for about 24 hours. When I turned the VX8R on...

    Solar charger for VX-8DR

Are you charging it using the 12V cigarette lighter adaptor adapter?

Turning off the GPS on a VX-8DR

I asked the same question awhile ago in regards to the VX-8R and these were the responses I got : http://www.worldwidedx.com/handitalkies/35433-yaesu-vx-8r-gps-battery.html

    Yaesu VX-8R on a Motorcycle

Do you have any experience with the Sena SMH10? How well does it work on the bike?

    Yaesu VX-8R on a Motorcycle

Damn, thats a nice bike -- a BMW K1600? I do a lot of touring myself and its painful on the Yamaha FZ1. My next tour bike will definitely be a BMW.

    Yaesu VX-8R on a Motorcycle

I'd definitely recommend replacing the rubber duck antenna on the VX-8DR with something else. I'm currently using a whip antenna (I forget the manufacturer), and I performs much better than the rubber duck antenna that came with my HT. Also, if you want to mount an antenna, you may want to...

why don't they make HTs that can do SSB?

6 meters -- are contacts usually on SSB or FM? The VX-8R only supports FM 6M, correct? Is this one reason I am unable to make 6 meter contacts? I've had the VX-8R for a couple of years now and have yet to make a single contact.
