Not exactly true. Especially with a pair of 2SC2290s as the drivers. You'll need a pair of that match the six finals. Then you have to consider the layout of the board and the location of the driver stage. Is it symmetrical to the other three push-pull stages? If it's not, the difference in RF lead lengths could affect performance. Your input splitters and output combiners will also need to be changed.

Tubes are easier. Once people get a chance to experience how fun these hg transistor amps are, they usually wind up buying a tube amp after they dick around with it long enough .
I have 2. An SB 220 and a Maverick 250.
I'll be putting one of them inline tomorrow, until I get this 2x6 sorted.
They also tend to have a lot less harmonic content, without any additional filtering required to achieve those specifications. I won't run a 12 volt linear as a base station because it's simply too difficult to get a clean signal with good IMD characteristics. To meet good IMD specifications at 12 volts, you are not getting more than about 60 watts per transistor at most.

I keep hearing the echo of 1-800-Toll-Free, a built-in driver is the devil's own invention. Stability issues with RF feedback are common. And matching the driver stage's output to the final stage's upper drive limit never seems to get a lot of attention. Probably no big deal for AM, but a cause of consternation on sideband.

The only thing that complicates the use of an internal driver, is decoupling the DC from the final stage and some basic shielding between the two stages.
