6 Meters is OPEN

My 6m SSB/CW antenna presently...6 element Wide Space on 25ft boom...at about 40-45ft

It's going to depend on what mode you are looking to operate with on 6m. I don't do FT-anything or FM on 6m, so the antennas I have built (a wire Moxon and a 3el Yagi) were designed for the SSB window of 50.100 to 50.200 or thereabouts.

I have learned, with a bunch of great help from BJ/Radionut, that 6m SSB is mainly weak signal work and an antenna with some additional gain over a dipole is almost required. During the rare and occasional Es openings lower gain beam antennas can work quite well, but I'm looking for more.

I want to be better able to join in "Meteor Scatter Mornings" from about 06:30 to 08:00 on 50.145 SSB, which I really enjoy. Great group of operators to talk with.

If you have local SSB traffic near you you may not need as much antenna. I hope you get on 6m, SSB needs operators since a huge portion have defected to digital only.

I have an older icom radio that I could probably keep on to at least monitor. Will have to dig it out of the garage. :) Appreciate the information.

I purchased a 6 element OWA(17' boom) 6m beam at XENIA/Dayton this year...it was to be a Dxexpedition antenna...somehow in shipping box got wet and was not shippable to site...I bought the parts...Elements/Boom and all the SSteel hardware(still in package) for $75 :giggle:...With my 5 "L" LFA in storage in my barn presently...I should be able to "merge" the two antennas into one monster 7 "L" wide space!!!!

It's always good to talk to you Gary, along with your neighbor in Anthony and anyone else that can hear me. I'm on most mornings and can always hear you when you're looking my way.

You were definitely in the right place, right time to score that antenna for $75! Very glad that you did.

Have been pricing the aluminum for mine at DXE this morning, turns out it's not as high as I expected. But, it will mean having to make the elements from two pieces which I'd prefer not doing. I'm still sourcing the boom square tubing which I may also have to make two-piece, not my first choice either.

While I was at DXE I stumbled across one of G0KSC's 5el LFAs with about the same numbers but the boom is about a foot shorter. I'm slightly tempted to go the easy route and order one but I'd much rather homebrew.

What dimension square tube does your 5el LFA use? Guessing 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" x ??

Yep: 1 1/2 inch square Double wall tubing...2 piece boom w/2 foot long inside coupling...was up and survived an F1 tornado passing just North of my location...(required TOTAL replacement roof on my home) golf ball size hail w/60-80 mph winds in front of storm pummeled the whole town.

Nice deal. I would be interested in seeing the assembly diagram of that antenna. I have a homemade six element OWA on a similar length boom that I built myself many years ago. I have no idea what the actual gain is but it works really well and has quite a sharp pattern.
