Is anyone getting any 6m openings ? I have 2m ssb and 6m on and just heard a station on 6m about 100 miles from me . I read somewhere that the other day 2m was wide open .

The East coast has been getting 2m openings lately from what I've heard. It's getting to be that time of year. Temp inversions, fog etc generally tell you when they are likely for 2m.

I'm not set up with an antenna for 6m but I do know this is the 'season' for it coming up now.

The name of the game is to leave a rig open and monitor the calling frequencies. When you're bored, make some calls as if nobody is calling, there is no way to tell if the bands are open.

I like the randomness of 2m openings and plan to eventually put up a beam so I can play around much better than my vertical allows.

So far my best opening has only been a 300 miler on FM, it was still a lot of fun to work New England from NJ.

I've monitored 6m SSB and FM for 12 years now and it has been one heck of a dry spell. I think it's been 6 months since I have made a contact on 6m.

2m has had some good ducting lately, a few days ago we were working Florida on FM.

I question the reliability of this man's forecasts only because the 2 meter band was wide open yesterday afternoon into the early evening hours here on the coast of New Jersey, it was also open this morning, however his color coded graphs show activity around this part of the country, but nothing covering Delaware and New Jersey......:confused1:

I'm fairly active on a local repeater at 146.985 Mhz, there is another repeater on the same frequency pairs in PA, and we've been hearing them come in under the PL tones quite often lately, more often and stronger since this recent heat wave hit us. I also monitor 145.580 simplex, and have been hearing a lot of distant activity on there as well.

I bookmarked that site, and will continue to compare his forecast models to what I actually hear for myself........

I'm not too sure but the forecast might be based on weather forecast of fronts. If the map is off by 100 miles it's still better than the weatherman's usual forecast guess.

It shows a decent opening right now in our area.

2 meter simplex was really weird this evening. I check into a simplex Skywarn net. I usually hear most of the stations in the next county, especially the net control operator, when the net started I could only hear the stations close in, half way through the net I was hearing stations at the opposite end of the next county that I never heard on simplex before.....

Must be about the time that predicted opening came through......:confused1:

2m is really odd that way. I work simplex pretty often and the properties are always odd. Some days the same fixed station will be S3, others, 60 over 9 at the same power levels. Used to make me crazy, grabbing my analyzer checking the readings for a bad connection.

Now that the leaves are coming in, you'll notice it more too, particularly up on 440. The winter 'reach' is being filled in again.
