Guys, the thin material on the bottom of my mag mount is torn and I can see the nut . Is that going to hurt my system as far as grounding or swr issues?

No but it might scratch your paint :) Some of the antenna companies have moved to a thin rubber cover rather than that easily torn film.

The film on the bottom of a magnet mount is foil or metalized polyester/mylar and is there to form a capacitive ground for the antenna. If is only torn in the middle and not too big of a hole, it probably won't affect it much.

Just to be sure we're talking about the same stuff - you're talking about the thin film on the bottom of the magnet mount right? I've had antennas where this was torn or a bunch was missing and didn't notice a difference at all. On many antennas there is a nut in the middle (like you mentioned) and so it's the most likely place to be torn as it's hollow under that section - in the photo below you can see easily where the hollow area is.

**In taking this photo I knocked over a full bottle of Marvel Mystery Oil and since it's below freezing here right now the plastic shattered when it hit the cement. So this is a $6 photo :)
