It's source will never be opened due to the fact that the military and government now rely on it. I don't know why that makes it controversial anway....

Like it or not, Winlink is here to stay. There are just too many services that depend on it now...
perhaps it's "controversial" because (for U.S. licensed amateurs) Part 97 specifically PROHIBITS NON-open source proticals on amateur bands
operation of Winstink is fine for EMMCON type comms on Mars freqs, but,......, real world, on AMATEUR freqs..... it is simply being used for e-mail by people sailing around the world. if they can afford a world class boat, then they can afford the AVAILABLE world wide commercial band RF e-mail services!!!!
Part 97 also PROHIBITS US licensed amatuers from using Amateur radio to provide the same services if they are commercially available. I'M specifically refering to HF e-mail over amateur freq's by the Pactor3 QRM bots.
