Am/ssb

Look under export radios, GL vs 979 in the forum. I explained what I want there. Thanks for the reply here. I think I'm going with the Lee, but still don't know...

Dude then buy a Lee. You wanna to talk SSB then don't buy the Lee. What ever buy what you whant.

The general lee is a great radio for AM only. No SSB. If this isn't an issue the general lee should give you years of use. Have the work done by a good tech like DTB, Doug's custom cb's, bells cb shop, bobs cb shop. There are a couple more but the ones I have listed are great techs. Good luck with whatever you purchase. Like said in the other post, you can get LOUD audio out of the galaxy radio, too loud like posted and the radio ends up sounding like crap. Have a good tune and align and get a good mic. If you can find them the old astatic 575 mic's are nice as well as the cr577 and the 2018 extreme mic. All are power mic's that may help with the loud audio.

What are some good new radios on the market that are great on am, but also have ssb? I have only used AM and their are a bunch of people in my area that use AM. So I have to have a great AM radio. I am kinda interested in ssb though. Some radios that I am considering...

Magnum 257hp

Yeticom optima

CRE 8900

Galaxy 979

Maybe a Stryker???

What do ya'll think? Any clearly better radio in the list?

I think you just answered your own question. Those are all good. Stryker, CRE, optima all from same plant. 257 was also at one time. Don't know what features you want but:

Stryker has echo and every feature you can imagine.

CRE has echo but long delay on shortest setting so forget that. It could be the best radio in terms of quality transmission but if you out it in your car, you will CRASH trying to adjust the mic gain. Holy crap. What's wrong with these people that make radios? Seriously, access the menu to change the mic gain or talkback.

Optima has best RX I've ever heard (especially using the ssb filter). I use the optima right now. Took Some mods to mic and had to add echo. No external adjustment due to room and no talkback. Haven't figured out yet. It does like all microphones so with 10" 4 to 8 pin adaptor cord, I can run anything I want. 1 watt dead key makes it louder than the Stryker on AM. Fan on heat sinc. Never gets hot, ever. Has heat sinc on regulator. All radios should. Wish the buttons lit up.

The 257...stick with stock mic. What? No! S t o c k M i c. Very good receive but picks up quite a bit of noise. Don't like the rfx75 on back. Gets very hot.

What's to say about the Galaxy radios. They are what they are and they're very very solid. I trust them more than any of the other ones mention, plus I can work on them. You can always add power and echo. Open the clarifier and align. Temperature changed you're way off frequency uears you open the clarifier. They will sound great in ssb if you tune them right. Obviously, they're good in AM also. If you want more channels, well....I don't like channel mods, Viagra, lescom etc....

RCI 2950 and 2970 are great radios, especially on ssb.

Cheers.

You guys are funny. "Solder the two wires together". I think you were answering a different question from a different topic.

Normally the mod V is good about being able to crank it down so the carrier is low but still swing pretty high. I think you mentioned a measly 14 watts though. That's crazy low. 980's don't swing a lot but they do talk pretty good...somehow. Anyway, sorry your question didn't get answered. I was thinkin' hard. Just. Couldn't come up with anything. The 989 isn't a big swinger though. If you were running something else that can dead key 1 watt and swing 25, the mod V would swing a lot better.

Let us know what the tech did.
