So Telstar no longer makes their audio compressor unit so I decided I would try this. You install it in the radio and use a condenser mic with it. It has a preamp and filter all in one so no amp is needed in the mic and no power needs to be sent up the mic cord etc.....

Yes you use a condenser mic with it. Uniden makes a Condenser Mic that sells for under $20 and often under $15 if you look around. I got mine for $13. Uniden BC645 is the condenser mic Uniden sells and use's with some of their radio's.
It is too easy to send power up a mic pin but some radio's and mic's do not have any extra wires in the cord. On top of that it is not like you need a lot of power to power a condenser mic so asking Joe no one to drop the power down from 13, 8 , or 9 volts and limiting current is asking a bit much.
It is exactly that it is a preamp and filter and provides the power. When I purchased it I thought it was a newer version of their older much more expensive VoiceMax speech compressor Telstar used to make. It was too expensive at $69 and sales where slow so he did away with it. Had I know it was not that I would not have purchased it. In fairness though it was mentioned what it did and I thought he was just simplifying how and what it did. So I can not fault the guy for my mistake. If I make a mistake I usually will not return an item because I do not learn a lesson from a " do over" at other peoples expense. So since I have it sitting around and a radio sitting around I might as well put it to use.
I have not asked the designer what it filters out but if it is like most amateurs they always filter the lows out when trying to gain audio in pileup's while DX'ing. You know what they say about assumptions though!? Since it is not a compressor and I do not need a scope to properly adjust it I am probably going to install it after Christmas. I am thinking about sending the unit out for a full alignment so I will have the Tech double check my work then!
I would like to get a set of prints for my radio Palomar SSB600 and try to increase the audio bandwidth that will pass through. It seems like a shame to put on a condenser mic and not increase the bandwidth of the audio section.
The radio is for my 16 year old son he just got his license. He is restoring my Dad's old 1995.5 Toyota Tacoma 4x4. Since I have had the radio sitting around for at least 7 years prob. more like 12 or 13 years.
I have a SP1a compresor and I have a NPC circuit board on the way so this LoudMouth unit is a bit too tame for me to put into a radio I intend to use!
If it really sounds good I will try to make a recording of it or a video or try to get someone else in Michigan to do that while I am on the air. I have never done any of that though so we will see what see.
I was hoping to hear from other's on this site that have tried it since google did not turn up much! I am thinking the amp and filter have to be a better design then we typical see in CB type power mics.
If I recall properly the President Lincoln has a much wider audio bandwidth then the 3.5khz typically seen in CB's and Export radios.If it does then a condenser mic and that setup could be a match made in heaven. I will do some research on that.
