I have just found (It was really always there, I just never thought about it) a little over 200` of wire, up about 30 feet in the air that I can feed from one end or the other. I was wanting to know if anyone here has played around with wire antennas and what insight you might be able to share.

What it is, the place were I work had a back-up electric service at one time, that included poles and high wire that went from the back of the plant to the front. Almost all of it was removed during a plant upgrade in the early 80`s, but there is still a run of wire, and poles that has 3 wires, just over 200 feet long.In total all three wires would be over 600`, but it is just like high tension wires, so it is three wires about 200` long, spaced about 5 foot apart. The ends are open and right in the center

of the run, it has a drop(an old service connect) to the ground, with all three legs and it runs north/south.

I was thinking of running out there with the mobile, and My tuner and try loading the thing up and see how well it will work.

Any thoughts one this???

Jeff,

The first thing is to make absolutely sure that the thing

is dead! (LOL) After that, it should be interesting. The

'drop' may be usable as a feed line depending on how

it's configured. If not, then I think you'll end up end

feeding it. The 200 feet would be a longwire on 40m

and up so will be sort of directional and the direction

will change with frequency. Another alternative would

be to connect to each end and make a loop. All kinds

of different configurations ~if~ you can get to the span

to make the connections (big 'if').

If the cables are bare, throwing a wire over a span, then

moving it along the span will give you an off center fed

antenna. Might even find a point where you wouldn't

need the tuner (sort of a modified 'Windom')...

LOL

Yes, Doc it is unhooked on both ends and dead, that was the first thing I checked!!

Don`t want to go hooking my "antannie" coax to High Voltage Lines <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/sick.gif ALT=":x"> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/sick.gif ALT=":x"> <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/sick.gif ALT=":x"> LOL

The Center drop is hooked to each line in the center and drops almost to ground level. The two wires on the outsides of the three are insulated, the center one is not.

I might go out this weekend and try it just for grins.

Thanks for the input Doc!
