I've been running one for years in my Jeep Wrangler with a Magnum 257. The jeep is just an incrediblly noisy vehicle. But the noise cancelling on that mic works GREAT, yet the audio is fantastic. I really like these mics.

The Astatic RD104 is probably the best microphone out there for mobile use!

Hey guys

For some time I've been thinking about buying a hand held power mike but wasn't sure what to buy. Well I bought one of the new Astatics the RD104E Road Devil and been getting some really good reports! One of the biggest things I like about it thats it's a NOISE CANCELLING mic,I wasn't aware that you get such a mic! Anyone else running one and what are your thoughts???

I also like the Road Devil, only thing I realy wasent to crazy about, is they only come in RED now! Why they quit making the black one, I dont know....What Im now useing is a old Astatic 557...same thing as the RD104, just about 25 to 30 years older! Got a great buy on it on ebay..."Brand New, Old Stock, Never been wired-up, $31.00!" Only draw back, is trying to find 7v batterys...seems they quit making those too...Have a few, but when they die, may try and rig it up for a 9v battery...

Road-Devil Mic

I bought my first Road Devil Mic about 6 months
ago, it lasted about 2 months and i had trouble
with the keyer inside the mic. I sent it back and
got another one, having same problem with my
newer one. So, i retired it.
Otherwise they worked pretty good.

I would hafta say a 575 is a d104 in disguise with a tone control! Real nice sounding mic, but as big a challenge in a noisy mobile environment as a d104! If ya need to pump up the audio in a noisy mobile deal, do the RD104!

JD :D

I ran a 575M6 for 12 years on many radios , was my mic of choice , always thought the D-104 hand held was to damned loud and that the 575 sounded better on sideband ....OK ...i've always wondered about the RD-104s ? ...one of the only mic's I never had the pleasure of using ,Don't even think I ever heard one ? I know longer use my 575M6 , I really dont know what in the hell I was thinking all of those years ? I personally do not like road noise or back ground noise coming in when IM modulating , but I also like NPC and Swing Kit mods on my radios which basically takes audio off the scale ...my bad ! ....after all these years I kind of did a servey on how drivers were sounding out there on the open roads and I narrowed it down to whom really sounded the best out there (more like the base station on wheels effect if you will) ...well 9 times out of 10 it had all came down to the same damned mic out there ....Yeap !! The Turner/Telex Road King -56 ....IM totally impressed to say the least !! and most of the ones that did sound like base stations on wheels were followed with a very nice touch of echo on the side ....REMARKABLE !!!! .....after all these years ...thats what this dude wanted to sound like !! No wind trunnel ,No road noise ,No over modualtion , .......I mean the windows rolled down and the stereo on in the back ground and this RK-56 just likes what the lip gaurd will let into it !!! .........yeah IM sure it has to do with how that certain radio is tuned and what not ....but IM sold on this non-powered NC mic !!! been going strong with mine for over 2 years now ......I still here them ask me every now and then If IM a base station !!!! Man !! You talk about CB EGO here dudes !!! (-: ......but I suppose the bottom line here is that we all have different type voices out there .....different radios and different tunings on those same radios ......so what might work for me ,may not work for somebody else .....there has been a lot of good mic's come my way over the years (and I always thought I needed a powered mic to be heard ) ....I was wrong ....the radio just needed to be tuned how I like it and how I like to be heard .....IM even hearing stock mic's these days sounding loud and proud and clean as can be (radio tuning) ........still would like to try a RD-104 one of these days for grinnies .....but I doubt anything will come close to the performance of my Road King 56 .....oh and by the way .....they have a copy of the RD-56 .......I think it's called CDL-56 ......FORGET IT !!! ...it just dont have the drive and or push of the Road King ....in other words ....you get what you pay for this time around.

I've been telling people for years that I've used my Road Devil D104 on just about every radio I've tested in the mobile and it's always sounded fantastic. Huge audio with noise cancelling. My rig is super noisy at highway speeds and I often have my windows down. The beauty of the Road Devil is I can close talk to it and sound good without having a ton of wind/road noise. I've tried so many microphones and none of them have come close to doing it as well as this mike in a noisy environment while still giving me big audio.

All that being said I am aware of the issue we discussed in another thread and the newer ones vs the older ones and the flaw in the key switch design now. Still a great microphone but they need to solve that issue.

Not really sure how different it is from the new ones but you'd think quality is superior. Not sure if the element or components are any different either other than the ptt switch itself. Hopefully it's a good sounding mic

Maybe I'll search around and see if the frequency range has changed from that version to the current

Not sure how to do it, but there is a resistor mod that removes the tinniness. Bob at Bob’s CB modded a Road Devil for me years ago. Still using it. It cleared it up at least for my voice.
