Would a multiband dipole for shortwave listening need a balun?

    Sure it does.
I would use 2 choke baluns. One at the antenna, other just where coax enters the house. This will cancel a lot of noise coax picks.

I've used a 40m dipole in an inverted V for shortwave and it worked fine.
