Hello all. I recently bought a bearcat SSb model. When I switch it over to upper or lower side band, the radio squeals quite loudly it seems until it warms up. I haven't been able to contact anyone with it yet. Dont know if no one in area or just not getting out. Also, in a.m. everything checks out on diagnosis program in the radio. When I switch it over to SSb on either setting, it will check out fine on RF out (I think) and then slowly go to fail. Anyone have some insight?

Sounds like either the radio or your antenna setup could have issues. What antenna setup are you using. And are we talking about a mobile install or a base setup? It's most likely the radio, but don't overlook other things either. Not a bad idea to check everything out before you send it off. Just some food for thought. Although it does appear to be a radio issue, ya never know!!

It is fed into a Wilson 1000 mag mount. I have been getting good reports for 25-30 miles with it. I am running it for a mobile setup also.

I AM BEGINNING TO THINK BUYING ONE AND SENDING IN BACK IN FOR SERVICE IS STANDARD PRACTICE BASED ON WHAT I HAVE EXPERIANCED 1ST HAND AND READING FORUMS ... WHEN THEY WORK THET WORK VERY WELL BUT LOSING XMIT POWER IS A COMMON COMPLAINT ... THE OWNERS MANUAL GIVES GOOD INSTRUCTIONS FOR RETURN TO VENDOR ... INCLUDE ALL PERTINENT 411 AND DESCRIPTION OF YOUR PEOBLEMS/ISSUES .. THE PROGRESS REPAIR PROGRESS CAN BE CHECKED USING A WEBSITE ALSO PROVIDED IN THE OWNERS MANUAL.. GOODLUCK !!! XXX

Actually, Uniden makes very good radios. And they have done so in the past as well. The MOSFET final they use (installed in that model of radio) is sensitive to improper antenna loads/improper antenna installations. Nor do they tolerate 'modding'. Other than that, they do work well. I rebuilt several older Uniden radios, they are stable and otherwise use quality components,

Uniden has a lousy policy of not making schematics available for the consumer. But their customer service is second to none. I'd make sure that your antenna and coax cable are in good shape and the antenna has a good match/SWR.
