A small power supply with a current limit is an exceptionally valuable tool for this kind of preliminary testing. A power supply that can't deliver more than one or two Amps will power a large amplifier keyed up with no drive input. And if there's a problem, it can only do one or two Amps' worth of damage.

This is what the engineer types mean by "smoke test". That small current-limited power supply is what we call the smokeless smoke tester.

Next time Gadget......Next time.. Thanks for the help over the days. I think I will just have to keep an eye out for a good amp that will do good on SSB. Pay once, cry once...
