connex cx4300hp

The 4300 is a bit of an orphan. The channel selector used in older radios like it controls the segments of the channel digits directly through mechanical contact circuits. Controls the PLL frequency the same way.

This radio replaces the metal-and-plastic selector with a microcontroller chip. You'll notice that the channel selector has far fewer "clicks" in one revolution of the knob than the older radios. This is because it's a rotary encoder. Feeds digital "clicks" to the controller chip telling it which way and how far you turn it. This also makes "unlocking" frequencies different. Instead of a jumper across pins on the circuit board, it takes a special handshake with that controller chip to unlock it. Would be very nice if someone figured out a cheap way to duplicate the "dongle" plug-in module that unlocks this one.

This is not so different from the way your household clothes washer has evolved the last 20 years. A big knob with a motor timer behind it and a bunch of switch contacts inside was the standard for a long time. Now it's push buttons and a digital display. Same song, next verse.

The radio lost popularity with drivers. I suspect that failures in the channel knob had a little to do with it. Try and find a replacement.

Newer isn't always better. Only when it works.
