crazy antenna idea

Sometimes i have crazy ideas and this is no exception. Has anyone ever tried tying a long wire antenna to balloons filled with helium and letting them rise to about 3 or 4 hundred feet? Seems like it would work. In the Navy we had an emergency radio that used a kite and it worked fairly well.
Any thoughts on this?

Didn't need one...once lightning hit that kite, you could hear old Ben screaming in the next county!
