I want to hear the rest of the story. Who filled the balloons for her? Family friend? Business acquaintance? Co-worker?

There has to be more to this than they have reported so far.

Pure oxygen? They wouldn't even float like they would if filled with helium. A common misconception is that oxygen will explode,it doesn't. It aggressively feeds an existing fire and will react with almost everything. I remember making oxygen and hydrogen in chemistry class and experimenting with them using flame and simple heat. It sounds more like the balloons were filled with hydrogen.

Thats why I am waiting on the rest of the story. We had a local gas distributor here hire a kid for summer help and he screwed up filling damn near every thing you could screw up.
They were calling customers and telling them to not use their gases, not to transport them and going out and swapping them out for about 72 hours non-stop.
Butt loads of liability involved in a screw-up like that.

Like I said, there had to be either a source of ignition already or the oxygen reacted violently with something, perhaps the rubber in the balloons. I still find it hard to believe someone would not realize that the balloons did not contain helium when they failed to float upwards.
