I fail to understand, radio transceiver is a device to send and receive rf signals through the air, if you hook it up to the inet why not throw the radio away, better yet just don't buy it to start with and hook up your computter and talk on any of the many chat programs and save yourselfs a bunch of money.

Well the idea is that two people can use vhf/uhf to talk to people on the other side of the country / world using the internet as the intermediate transport. Kinda like a repeater. You can also just use it to voice or text chat using the computers, but there's plenty of other programs for that.
