My bench had always been shared in duty as my "work at home" spot as well. It had stuff all over it to do with "work".... other stuff I just never had a plave for.... it was a mess. The test equipment was all over the place and NOT laid out well for.... frankly.... ANYTHING.

The 26th of this month will be the first anniversary of my layoff and thus entry into retirement. I just never put a priority on this.... until now!!!!

A lot of older equipment.... sure. But I like it. NOW it is arranged where I can use it easily. All the traces of "work" are gone, the unrelated cruft is now neatly arranged on a 6 ft shelf on the opposite wall and everything was arranged in a way that makes sense.... well.... to ME it makes sense. I guess I should say.... TODAY.... to ME... it makes sense. It may change after I use it a while.

I've been saying for years I want to do this in retirement... as a hobby... just to keep my brain clicking. Well HERE I AM!!!!!!

As mentioned above I am sure that once I kick things in gear... I will find changes that need to be made. But for now... I like it!!!!

Don't feel alone in the clutter, you should see my garage work shop. I spent a life time filling it with tools and equipment as I could afford it but too many jobs to do and no time to organize. I sometimes look at it and say I have to better use my space someday. But look at it this way, You and I never get bored and wonder what to do ! LOL

Yeah, but now that I am retired......

I have the time,
I have the equipment,
I have the equipment organized/laid out.......

I just have to be able to justify the ongoing expenses to "Her Royal Majesty"!!!!!!!!! ;)

The GOOD news is ... I have a **** pot of radios to work on and play with.
I've been collecting spot "lots" around here for a few years of radios in totally questionable condition. Some may work and just need alignment, some may not work. If I can repair them, I will align them. It is all for fun anyway.

Besides... by the time I get up and running..... the solar cycle will be winding down and I imagine folks will lose interest again. But I will be having fun.

I here you. In my case I have 3 sons and each time one graduates from college they come home for a year or 2 until they get their own place and I lose my radio and reloading room. My wife loses her sewing/arts and crafts space since we share a space.

I can feel your pain. You know what they say Life's a Bitch and then you Die. The house I live in was suppose to be my starter house and here I am 49 years later still working on it, because I married the wrong woman. I never wanted to be a carpenter but I paid for it twice and now I disagree with No-One ! LOL

I laugh at you two guys because both of you are miles ahead of me. I wish I had the knowledge and tools you guys have because bench work radio repair is a good retirement job. Sure beats crawling around on the ground doing Body Work ! LOL

That's my retirement plan, assuming there are still serviceable radios then. I'm sad to see thru-hole disappear but the more I'm forced to work on smd, the more I realize it's not the end of the world.

I need to learn so much. This is good about that. I do think they need to have a teaching corner though were they teach you how to purchase test gear? How to hook it up! How to use it to do the basics like doing an alignment and trouble shooting a CB etc...

There are so many absolutely brilliant minds on this site with decades of experince going untapped. Some sort of dirt cheap electronic online ondemand class or such!

I don't know that it will ever become an income source for me. I'd have to be good at it first... and I am just trying to make ME happy that I can start getting into it. Since i moved into operating system software back in the mid 80s, I lost a LOT of ground in building "hands on experience". That's the main thing I am in it for.... to recover the ability to do the work.

Nothing wrong with enjoying to learn ! I did the same thing with computers back when I was in Industry and knew I had to stay on top of things to compete in the job market. My first computer was a DOS computer not Windows but I couldn't clear my mind for learning until my X-wife and I separated. But now I'm out of industry I'm sick of learning computer changes. Thus back into learning radio but wish I would have had some training, but I'm thankful for the good bunch in here that Put Up With Me ! LOL
