I have a galaxy 33hp2 that has bad reflect. It reads 1:1 for swr, but when I talk, the reflect swings into the red. It also has a crackle sound in the receive. Anyone have any idea on what could cause this?

take the speaker side of the radio off and see if the coils in the back have been streatched..if so gentle try to squeeze them back into shape..that should help with the reflected power.its caused by second harmonics,your antenna cant accept them so it rejects them and shows as reflected power.as far as the crackle you might try cleaning the rf gain switch and squelch switch with some contact cleaner..
Severe overmodulation will cause the transmitter's final stage to feed harmonic frequencies into the antenna, but only when you modulate.
The RF energy in those frequencies is not anywhere near the frequency your antenna is tuned to operate with. The SWR meter gets fooled into that high reading because the SWR at 54, 81, 108 MHz and higher really is high.
Even if the SWR at 27 MHz is low.
If the mike-audio compressor-limiter transistor TR32 has been removed, this will allow severe overmodulation and produce enough RF-harmonic energy to do what you described.
The antenna is not misbehaving, it's the quality of your transmit signal that's causing the high reading.

I figured it out. The tech that had their hands in it, over tuned it bad. I tuned it back down and it works great now. Just never seen that before. I appreciate your help.
So he was not a Technician then. Lets call butchers and hacks what they are! They do not deserve the right to be called a Technician. You have Grease Monkeys, Mechanics and Automotive Technicians and they are not the same thing at all. Likewise someone that can not align a radio is not a Tech by any stretch of the imagination! A moron can clip a limiter and crank a pot that is not a Technician.
Ever time you call a hack or butcher a Tech it diminishes the value and meaning of the word! Kind of like how the word "love" in English is abused to the point that the meaning has been severely degraded!
