Im currently working on adding in some extra channels on a Dx-959 using the good 'ole P5 and P6 method. I dont wanna hack up the outter portion of this radio as it is brand new and is still all shiny and pretty haha. So instead of using two switches mounted on some random part of the chassis as the mod calls for, Id like to find a way to install it using JUST the Noiseblanker Switch. Since this switch is never used on any of my CBs I would like to disable it and wire up the P5 and P6 mod right through that switch.

So here is my obvious dilemma: Rather then having two SPST switches mounted in line between those two wires....id like to use this one 3 position switch to obtain all 4 positions needed for the mod to work. I cant, however, logically think of a way to make 4 positions work with a 3 position switch! I need to obtain:

Open Open
Closed Closed
Open Closed
Closed Open

Ive heard of it being done but can find no details of it online. I do have the option of using another switch upfront like the PA switch or Tone switch which are also never used, but was trying to keep it to one switch rather then two. Any ideas or comments?

using the single switch like you are saying is only able to do it with the galaxy channel kits if you can find one.you will need to use 2 switches for the P5 and P6 mod if you want all the channels available with this mod. some people just want a certain amount of channels and use one switch.

on my personal radio I do not want the lower channels and use the tone switch to get the uppers just above 27.405. to get them both P5 and P6 have to be open and I tied them in to open when I flip the tone switch.

Yeah; using the switches on the front panel might seem like the thing to do. But it is a lot harder than you think. Ever had to work on it before? It's a bear. Consider the fact that taking out those switch boards is not an easy thing to do. Of course you will have to default the stock functions of those switches, cut traces, and then route the P5/P6 wires in and out. And if you should make a mistake and fry something; then you will be pretty much on your own.

No small wonder that mod is done with two SPST switches on the back of the case, as it just makes it much easier to accomplish and just as easy to reverse.

Ok thanks Sonoma. I was kinda worried about that. My DX949 uses the NB switch but like you said...it uses a kit..The Viagra B board. Right now ive settled on using the NB switch and the PA switch. But i need a little more info.

Ok with the noiseblanker switch....i always leave it in the off position. Inside the Galaxy there are three wires which come from the switch...One goes to a pin labeled 8v. One labeled ANL and one labeled NB. I think I am safe to assume that When in the OFF position it is just using the 8v pin. If i were to take the wires that go to the NB and ANL out of the pin holder and wire them into the line for say P5...obviously I could make it so say NB is Open and ANL is closed....my worry then though is.....what does that then in turn do to the NB circuit? is there a way to using this method that would in turn assure that the NB stayed off. Same goes for using PA switch. If i were to use that switch could I make it stay in CB mode while using the other two wires?

Sonoma, with what you said with your personal Radio, how did you handle the position of the switch then in terms of its position within the circuit. For example: using the tone switch....how is the radio recognizing NOW what position to keep that circuit in?

I was just looking at what I did to make it work and found the drawing and you have to cut traces on the board to use the tone switch and make a few jumpers with solder on the board.I pulled the covers on the radio and I put the illuminated knobs on it and can not see inside for all the wires. I remember it took a few try's to get it right. like I said I made it so it would open both wires to get the uppers I wanted. then when I flipped the switch it would connect them back together.you have to totally remove the front of the radio to do this. I would not do it again due to the difficulty of doing it. in fact I bought a couple blue dot viagra boards awhile back and plan to put the radio back the way it was and install one of the viagra boards on it.

Haha ok. Well then that settles it. Two SPST switches will be installed for this mod! Thanks guys for the advice and tips! I have years of experience with electronics but only recently have started messing with the electronic modding side of CBs so still a bit of a beginner at this. Always good to get advice and opinions from others and this has been a great forum for that! You guys rock!

Hmm, now your last picture has me thinking. Does that diagram take into account all three positions of the switch in regards to the entire Frequency Mod? Because instead of removing the whole front I could just as easily manipulate the circuit where it enters the Main Board to create the same function. Or does that picture just take into the OPEN account that you stated you wanted to use?

the way I do the switches when when I put them on the outside of the radio is I drill the 2 holes where the 2 covers meet. I do not drill holes in the middle of the covers for them. I just cut a small amount of the covers off where they meet to allow the switches to work out the side and the switches are bolted to the inside case and stay put when you pull the covers off. it leaves such a small mark on each cover that if you pull the switches you hardly see where you cut them. I actually use a nibbler to trim the covers to allow the switches to toggle after I mount the switches to the case. hope this explains it so you understand.
