You would be correct. AM has been DOA up here where I am in British Columbia since the early 2000's. The govt gave the truckers here four common VHF channels and they all moved there within five years. Our local REACT chapter (I was a 9 monitor) shut down around the same time. Everybody else left when cellphones became reliable. People have GMRS or marine VHF radios for emergencies. I can honestly say I haven't heard local AM traffic on the radio in at least 15 years now! There are however, quite a few sideband operators still active.You must not talk on AM very much.
I do occasionally fire up my old Cobra 148GTL side-mic with a Turner +3 on 26.915 AM just for a nostalgia blast, but most of the time I'm on SSB or FM.
