Hello,
Easy to understand. The 3600 boards (the superstar 3900 uses the rci-built ept3600 board) are somewhat less than stable, have poor adjacent-channel rejection, are prone to front-end overload, warble on SSB, are prone to rotten factory alignment, are prone to 'cold solder' joints, have poorer noise-blankers, and won't do 15 peak-avg watts from a 1 watt d.k. when modified (the dual-final will, but doesn't sound good doing it. the GrantLT does!).
They -do- offer some nice features, but aren't as good a -radio-.
The Texas Ranger 296 (not the others) is an almost identical circuit, but suffers from lower build-quality and somewhat lower quality components. Won't give more than 11 watts peak-average (and when driving an amp, that is signifigant).
Bear in mind, it all depends on what -you- want in a radio! Different users have different expectations/requirements. One size doesn't really fit all, so to speak.
So get what pleases -you-!!
Just my personal experience and opinion.
Hope this helps!
