GROUNDING BASE ANTENNA?

I am using a fiberglass two piece antenna Patriot I think. I have a twenty foot steel galvanized pole the antenna is mounted on to the eves of the roof and to that is my Cobra 148 running off a power supply and that has a grounded power plug to my outlet. What I am wondering should I run a earth ground from the mast? And I also live in an area where lightning strikes often and actually hits the house or property several times a year. If I grounded the antenna would it help my output and would it save my radio?

RF ground is not the same as an electrical ground.

You should ground your mast to a copper clad steel rod pounded in at the base. You should then run #6 AWG wire from that rod, to your electrical service grounding rod. Every 6 feet or so, you should pound in another rod.

You should also run a wire DIRECTLY from your radio, to a ground outside, using as short a length of wire as possible. That ground should also be linked to your electrical service ground rod.

Surface area is key.

Copper tape > wire for RF.
