Ham ticket renewal

It happened a couple years back. Paid no fees when I got Tech in '21. Suddenly $35 after General + changing my call in '23. Got a GMRS license late last year, another $35.

I guess we've been edited, but I get your point.
Been a tech since mid 90's I guess, 1st time having to pony up after the initial investment.
I too got the GMRS, don't know why as I don't use it. Thought I might be able to on my IC208, but antenna won't go there I don't think as far as transmit. I do listen in sometimes for local chatter. I run the Comet tri-band 6m-2m-440.
Will be the last time I renew me thinks.

Hmmmm!

just checked my license.

back a few years ago, I checked into a statewide net on 3910 kHz LSB.

since I was new on this net, someone checked me out on QRZ.com
and told to me go look at my license status. I found my license was
expired for a few months! so the next day I went to the FCC website
and renewed. There was no charge, and I my license was renewed in
a few days and got a PDF copy of it. this was back in January 2022.

my license is good until 2032.

I wonder if I will be good until 2032!

I'm big mad now, thanks big freeloading brother. Ugh. Talk about biting the hand that feeds it. I need to go touch grass now for a few hours.

On December 29, 2020 the FCC issued a FCC Report and Order announcing the new fees. According to the document, the fee for an amateur radio technician, general or extra license, which previously was without charge, will now cost $35. The fee will apply to vanity call signs as well. The cost of a GMRS license will decrease from $70 to only $35. The licenses for both services are valid for 10 years.

Sorry Jeff, I had to vent a little........

We have a license for life, but every year we pay for it, 56 Euro for this year, every year it will go up.
Not complaining though, spend 7 grand last year on radio's gadgets and antenna's .....

Well now I feel guilty. Our licenses are free and have been for a couple of decades. Good for 99 years or can be reissued after 10 years following death if notice is given.

So in the spring of 24 I decided to stop being lazy and accomplish something. Since I’m curious about gmrs local and on vacation I grabbed the no test license for 35 bucks. Then I cracked a book and created an arrl account and got my Tech license. Can’t remember the total now but for less then 90 bucks I’m good to go for ten years for both. When you average that cost out it’s a deal.

Well, got a little bit of a shock when I went to renew my ticket yesterday. I had no idea they started charging for renewals, or when. I must live in a cave

Yes, FCC renewals, vanity requests, and new applications started having a $35 fee in April, 2022 .......
