Sounds like you might have some cold solder joints on the microprocessor. If you have good soldering skills, take a 15 watt or smaller iron and lightly touch the pins on the processor andgive them a dab of fresh solder. Be careful not to get to much heat on them.

Hello,

It is a typical problem, the Micro Boards are 4 layer and can be tricky to remove the Microprocessor to install the chipswitch.

Usually you get poor connections on the top side of the PCB

to the Socket. You can carefully 'carve' out the plastic of the socket on the pins that need top soldering. I have had to repair others that way.

Also, you may need to OHM out pin connections to make sure you have good contact.

Another possible problem can be caused by "BAD GLUE" , The regulators and larger capacitors on the Board are held down to the PCB with Tan or Yellowish epoxy. This epoxy has been found to get Black or Dark Brown and really brittle(should be pliable).

When this happens it has been known to become Conductive and can also damage PCB traces. It should be removed and the PCB should be cleaned and inspected for damage.

I have seen a "thru-plating VIA" damaged by this effect and has caused intermittent problems.

Let me know If I can be of any help,

Roger

Hi,

Be sure to Examine under the Regulators (Where the Glue used to be) The Glue was also know to Corrode the traces on the PCB.

(Happens in TV's too) I have had to repair the Thru hole connection on the VIA under the Middle LM regulator. It had opened up due to Glue Corrosion (Top pad was damaged where it met the Trace)

I suggest after removing the glue, cleaning the PCB with alcohol and then Examining the areas with a Magnifier.

Reparing as necessasary, You could have an intermittent connection.

Roger
