In this day of technology is there really any reason for an amateur radio hurricane net?

I mean, what is the benefit for anyone but other amateurs?

Am I missing anything here?

I think what you may be missing is that everyone doesn't have access to all that technology. Another side of it is that the information used to furnish what is given by some of that 'technology' has to come from somewhere. For instance, the National Weather Service uses information from "weather watchers", some of whom are hams/CB'ers/etc. It's a 'two-way' street.

Those do make sense, I just mean the average person who watches TV or listens to a am/fm radio, when "technology fails", then what.

I just see all this interest in my town for these new hams to take the storm watch classes and they ask them to monitor HF for the hurricane nets. What in the hell are we going to do in the midwest for a hurricane net?

The net is how info is passed between the hurricane damaged areas and all of the family members up north who are concerned about the victims.
