Hygain 8 not VIII 40 ch ssb


Ah yes. The Puerto Rico-made "8", not the Japan-made "VIII".

The parts and circuit boards came from Cybernet in Japan. Don't know how much of the final assembly was done in PR, but that was the idea.

It's pretty much the same radio, but all I remember is that there were some "production change" differences. Been too long to remember what.

The japanese yen was rising in value at the time, year by year. The US dollar was falling as oil prices rose. Building them in PR was meant to reduce costs by buying only the materials to make the radio from Japan. Don't know how much cheaper labor was in PR at the time, but when the market for 40-channel CB radios imploded, Hy-Gain de Puerto Rico was 10-7 like most of the other brands of the day.

Oh, and it does say "VIII" on the rear-panel plate.
