Icom 720 very low mic gain on ssb

My 720 has very low output on ssb and the mic gain is very low. The only way to get it to work is to run it turned way up and rub the compression turned on and my turner sskturned up. What gives?

Did you just add this mic? I had a 720 years ago and the 1104c I tried on it sucked to put nicely.

Some Icom rigs use an electret mic circuit, and the impedence gets a bit wonky with certain mics. I would check that.

I tried a d 104 and it was worse. I had a icom desk mic but it quit on me.

have you adjusted the bottom hole? the turner ssk has 2 adjustments one on top the other in hole on bottom,,,,

Exactly, the 720 has a mic amp built in and requires a special mic element. The 104, 1104c, or turners just don't sound good. For mine I always use the ICOM SM6

I have an sm 6 but it needs a new element. May just fix it up. NNothing can't do myself.

Well the issue is not a mic gain problem, it is a problem in the compressor circuit. Is there a vr pot I can adjust for the compression? It seems like that has been turned way down.

Well got it working good. Found the compressor pot was turned off. All is working good now, a strong 80 watts out on 10 meters.
