Hi Folks,
This is probably a very dump question that I have yet to have the "light" coming on.

What is the difference between Icom's 78 and the 718? Both are listed on their website. Same weight, almost the same amount of memory, but the 78 is listed as about $100 more.

Amateur Products - Icom America

Reviews are pretty much nil on the 78 as well.

Am in the market for a entry level HF rig.

Thanks!

Look at the specifications for each radio at the link YOU posted and you'll see the differences between th e718 and the export model 78.

i bet the only real difference is the IC-718 steps through the amateur bands, and the IC-78 is set up for easy access the maritime frequencies, (other than that i dont see much difference) other than the VFO knob = the 718 has the finger dimple and the 78 does not

I haven't used an IC78, but I have a 718 that I got specifically for portable operations, like Field Day.

For an entry level/second radio on HF, it is a great choice. Really nothing wrong with it as a main HF rig, other than the number of knobs and no XIT...

Shop around online and you can find some great deals.
