Icom IC-86V HT

I have one, will never sell it. Only time it leaves my pack is for charging and use. Furthest contact with a MFJ Long Ranger collapsible efhw is 105 km, 265 km with a EDZ on a 14' mast.

The good: long battery life, rugged, water resistent, shear power, simple to use when freezing your hands off, small off/on power button (no accidental turning on)

The bad: small off/on button, can't turn on with gloves on.

The ugly: according to the XYL, me. hahahaha
Seriously it is a work horse bare bones radio, worthy of the funds.

Interesting, I didn't even read there. My head explodes most time I read their reviews. I just want a basic 2 meter. Looks like this will do. Has a high capacity battery and rapid charger. 7 watts output. Loud speaker audio. No programming available for it, so it must be easy to program. BNC is a plus.

I have an old school loaded telescoping antenna with BNC. It's an old Rat Shack antenna. It's pretty stout. 7 watts should fire it up. Might be good time to try one of those flexible tacticool pocket antenna.

My V86 came today. It's just what I wanted. Has a nice feel about it. menu and programming is simple. Receive and transmit audio is just as others say. Price is very affordable and the 7 watts is useful. Might invest in the dry cell pack. On the fence if I expand it or not.

Well in awhile when you are bored just remember your friend from the north. ;)
I like mine, have had many contacts from mountain tops to 85+ km distances.
Opening it up seems to be a mystery on the web, but if you wish inbox me.

I have seen a video on expansion. Fairly straightforward.

I'm very impressed with the stock rubber duck. Seems to work very well. I was comparing weather reception against other antennas I have. I'm just going to use the stock duck. Scan speed is nice, too.

Hello gentlemen and Ladies. I have the dreaded RCI-2990 receive issue where my radio gets distorted when people get close to my location. I found the C90 Capacitor, but I can not for the life of me find the C89 capacitor. Can or does anyone have a picture of the exact location of C89 ? Thank you in advance, Wes
