Would like to know if anyone is currently using one of these or has used one in the past. I want to get int SSB on these bands and most of the used high power equipment selld for way more than I want to pay for used. I am seriously considering this rig but I would like to get opinions on it before I spend that kind of cash for a rig.

Thanks

Hey ED

Well that is a nice rig and very expensive so it depends on what your going to do with it or how involved you are going to get into it.

antennas for SSB can be expensive if your going to do satelitte work. but the nice thing about vhf/uhf is you can build your own antennas cheap if you have the time.

if your not interested in satellite then go with the 706MKIIG or FT-897 FT-857 or even the TS-2000 or FT-847 so you get hf with it also. I talk on 2 meter SSB all the time with a 5 element home made antenna converted from a radio shack tv antenna. I use my TS-2000 and the guy i usually talk to is on a 706MKIIG and a FT-857, and a FT-847 they all sound good.

By the way I aquired a 16element 2 meter beam a few weeks ago and when it warms up out there this baby is going in the air.

2 meter SSB is QUIET!!!!!!!!! on horizontal

ED

If you have a 10 element already try to find someone that may loan you a 706 or such you will be suprised what 50 watts and a 10element beam will do,,,,,also if your going for the general then 40 meter during the day and 75 meter at night will give you GREAT results with just a long wire

General, HELL, I'm going for the EXTRA .

Thats a great idea Bill, I might just do that. I have a friend that has a 706 I might see if he would do that.

Thanks

Hey BILL and STU,

All those radios that you mentioned, except the TS2000, only offer 50 watts on ssb and I want at the least 100. I have a friend that lives over 200 miles and we both want to be able to talk SSB simplex and I believe we can. The TS2000 is more than I am willing to pay, although it is a great rig. VHF/UHF amps make a used rig cost as much as a new 910 so that kind of rules that out too. I was hoping that someone on the forum here has used one or is using one now. I read the review in QST and it was rated very highly and very user friendly. The Icom 746 pro offers 100 watts on 2 meters, but has no 440, so I am steering away from it also. But hey, thanks for all the suggestions my friend, but those rigs have all been looked at at the pros and cons( that I can see) have been taken into account. I already have a 10 element Cushcraft beam that I can put horizontal and that will do the job, it performs awesome on FM simplex

Well I have done more checking and reading. Seems this radio gets a pretty good bill of health. Now if I ca just find one at a garage sale for $100 LOL . Oh well I got time, so I will make my decision slowly.

Hey Bill, It would be great to catch you on 20 sometime, I am just going to have to get my code done and then we can QSO.

Take care.

You are right about the antenna system, it has got to be up to the task. Like I said before I have a 10 element Cushcraft that seems to be a very good antenna.

220ft is not bad for a repeater antenna, bur how abot 11,700 ft. Man out here in Colorado mountain top repeaters really give great coverage.

Well it is good to hear that these rigs sound good to. Was that FM or SSB? I think I may just have to give HRO a call .

Thanks for all the input, but keep it coming, I'm still listenin.

One of the "locals" has had the IC-910 for about a mounth now and loves it. I haven't been over to operate it but can tell you it sounds GREAT in my RX when I talk to him. As far as the power thing, Remember on UHF/VHF it's more the antenna system than power out put. Invest your $$ into a good antenna(or build one), Good coax (7/8" is nice) and HEIGHT of antenna( height will make the most difference). As an example, if I'm on a good hill I can hit our local repeater with my Yaesu VX-2 HT at 1/10th of a watt 35-40 miles away using the 3 inch rubber ducky antenna on the HT. I'm a little "scratchy" but in good. If I bump it up to a full 1 watt I'm full quieting. Our repeater antenna is at 220 ft. There are many plans on the net for antennas. I'm building a 8 element UHF like this one Quagi antenna now. I've seen plans for 15-18 elements but I think 8 will work for what I want to do. If that isn't enough you can always stack antennas for even more gain but I would suggest a good power divider like this one.www.m2inc.com/

Well I know now that it is possible for me and my friend who lives 200 miles away to talk on 2 meter SSB. My Ham neighbor and him were able to talk back and forth on 50 watts apiece. So hello HRO and thank you Providian . Man I love this hobby.

Thanks to everyone who made suggestions.

COOL ! Nice rig. I just wish they made a 6m module for it. Maybe one day they will make a 910 PRO

Lets see Ten-Tec makes a 2 meter to 6 meter transverter. Wouldn't that just be slick, ahh but then........ more antennas . Mike maybe you and I could make the connection sometime. Is there a Megalink repeater near Smithville? if there is let me know.

Our UHF repeater has Echolink. It's been down for a couple of weeks but it's back up now. Node# 135043. I've talked to a few from the forum on it. Stop on by sometime.Maybe you can catch Joe (WV5X) on his IC-910 and you can hear what it sounds like
