I don't know NB, but how strange is it that we tend to think of such people as primitive and grubbing around in the ground for food?

I doubt that if my neighbors all got together and decided to try something like this, even on a much smaller scale, we could never have a meeting of minds as to how to even get started. But, before that happened the local government authorities would never let such a project go forward...even if it meant our total demise.

So, how smart are we?

perhaps religion caused a greater unity of the people, along with the fear from raiding enemies.

according to wiki, the digging may not have been as difficult as we think in soft volcanic rock, if so definitely within a decade.
