Isn't It Ironic ?
The SNAP/Food Stamp Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is pleased to be distributing the greatest amount of free meals and food stamps ever.

Meanwhile, the National Park Service, administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, asks us to "Please Do Not Feed The Animals." This is because the animals may grow dependent on handouts and not learn to take care of themselves.

Thus endeth today’s Lesson.

I guess it's obvious you never had to worry about money. If you're so willing to criticise a program designed to prevent starvation then maybe you can explain to me why countries with strong welfare systems have stagnant birth rates and countries that are known for famine have sky high birth rates. I think it just goes to show that most people don't want to fuck over the system and given a choice after their needs are taken care of they choose not to bring another generation of disadvantaged children into the world.
And it seems in countries that are known for famine most parents have children purely to have someone to look after them in their old age instead of a pension.
Seems to me to be obvious which country i'd like to live in.

fodendaf, I am sorry if my little poke offended you but your reply "I guess it's obvious you never had to worry about money" is so far from the truth it is not funny. I was on my own at 13 years old, living in the upstairs apartment of an abandoned house and eating from bakery dumpsters and day end food dumps behind Mc Donalds. Even at that age, I knew I had to stay in school and WORK if I should ever want anything. I messed up a few times along the way but I came out just fine. I work very hard for what I have and am sometimes made fun of for the way I take care of the things I have earned. Believe me as I have lived it, most people DO want to Buck over the system as you say and would rather lay around and do nothing while others take care of them.

Something to think about..When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is the beginning of the end of any nation

Why?
By a misuse of statistics, incorrect interpretation of statistics, and a lack of pertinent knowledge concerning those statistics.
Personally, I don't care what 'other countries' have. I do know what -this- country has as a result of the usual government 'give a ways'. I also know enough history to see where we have a LOT in common with the Roman empire in it's last days. Ever think about that??

There's no need for an apology. Opinions are what they are and nobody should be ashamed of them. But you should know that not everyone agrees with you. I don't think that the economic downturn was caused by the welfare state in my country, the republic of ireland nor as I understand it was it in america. I understand it was caused by unsecured sub-prime lending. I have a very small income as it is and little skilled employment prospects yet I have never taken welfare handouts so I feel no culpability from your argument. But political words in the media are life and death for those whose lives they affect.

People are not animals, they cannot birth into a grass field spend 8 hours feeding, 8 hours ruminating and 8 hours sleeping. Sometimes I wish they were as it would make the economic system a lot easier for me. That means they need care and education which some would see as a dangerously socialist ideal. That is not something anyone can do on their own. That is the job of the state. Just because half the people reason that they don't want to pay taxes doesn't mean that reasoning is correct for a functioning nation.

has anyone researched which demographic group is the largest benefactor of that system? It just may be that it isn't a case of a bunch of malingerers but people in real need.
When Romney a few weeks ago made that statement about the poor he ended it with, "they have safety nets" . Rush Limbaugh was livid saying "no, don't say that, that's the problem. " It's a fact that like IDI in his past, some folks have it rough 24/7/365. But a dollar in that time was worth way more than a dollar now. It's a sensitive subject, but I don't think a dope fiend like Limbaugh is correct in his belief.

I work for what I have. My father worked for what he has. His father worked for what he had. See the pattern. Same goes for the people with their hands out for 'assistance'. There are some that grew up on hand outs and made something of themselves as adults. And there are some that grew up in working family homes that, as adults, choose handouts for a living. But, I would be willing to wager that most grow up repeating what their parents example was.

That said, most households have more than one child and thusly multiplies the situation of that family unit.
