jo-gunn smokin' gun II vs. Maco Y quad

anyway, some people see the maco brand and think "thats cheap". no idea where that perception comes from in all honesty, if you have a maco you arent competing with anyone. i mean this very, very literally

the smokin gun ii IS a good antenna, dont get me wrong here. technically the maco isnt even a true y-quad if you wanna break down the fundamentals, yet what constitutes a true y-quad is, in and of itself, debatable

hopefully this makes sense. i hear things about a colossal 5/8 vertical yet my main talker is ye olde maco v58, aka the wilson alpha v58 and i cant think of a single negative thing to say about it, either

like i said: nothing competes with a maco. doesnt matter which antenna either, it may be old and extremely outdated tech yet with the right completely analog radio and a bit of effort you would be VERY surprised

im pretty sure someone on this forum remembers the pdl-2..
I remember a few people around the south San Jose area had those in the late 70's/early 80's. Never owned one myself, but they were an interesting looking antenna.

Hi Somicide, since i asked this question, i made myself a Yagi beam 2 elements as test Its Works well. No gamma match. I reached over 100 km distance (locally, not skip). on SSB. People around are amazed on how it is powerfull for an homemade antenna.

I realized how narrow the band is and also the side rejection seems to me, a little weak. That's why i was looking for an alternative to the PDL 2 cause as you know, Avanti doesn't make anymore this great antenna. And when one PDL 2 appears for sales, it's two and three times the value.

I compared the spec of the PDL 2, the Maco Y-quad and the Smokin gunn II from Jo gunn and on paper... the are very similar. That's when i realized, i should asked people , their experience....

For longevity.... I'd go with a jo gunn, they are built like tanks. I ran a 3.3 star for many years
