Microsoft 12 fubared

I just resurrected a 2003 Dell Optiplex with Windows XP on it mainly for project for relax time. Been checking out Linux Mint. Next plan is to look at Zorin OS. I have Windows 10 on a couple older PCs and Windows 11 on one. Not fond of Windows 11, I have to admit.

I'm trying out Zorin. I like it. Very "Windows" like. https://zorin.com/

I'm using the free Core version. The paid version appears to come bundled with a bunch of free software I can install on my own.

P.S. You can run some Windows apps in Linux using Wine.

Over the years I've tried running amateur radio programs like HRD on Linux. It was hit and miss, actually mostly miss. Neither Wine or Bottles could make these windows programs work. But today that doesn't matter to me because a lot of the ham programs have been updated to work on Linux. I will never complain about it because I know these folks are busy with life and work. Plus as mentioned these programs are free, so I would feel like a hypocrite to complain about it. Now if I could just get my Yaesu 710 to transmit using ft8 on Pop os cosmic.

Yea....most Windows logging programs that need to do rig control don't work with Wine.

I have CQRLog installed in Zorin and working with my Yaesu FT-710. Nice program and will satisfy the needs of most hams, but I will continue to use Windows for my ham radio station. I can't give up N1MM contest logger or DXLab.

I really like CQRLog, I guess you could say it's the HRD of Linux. I also use two other logging programs called Xlog and Qlog as backups. After I upload my contacts from CQRLog, I export my ADIF log to Xlog and Qlog. If something happens to CQRLog, I can re-install it, then import my last ADIF file from one of the other logging programs and I'm up and running again.
