is there anyway to boost the modulation on a cobra 142 ,140 ,uniden washington and so forth with out the mod pot

Yes there is. I'll post again later when I get to the shop and see if I can give you the details. If you just use a good-quality power mic, you won't need to mod the radio. They have excellent modulation characteristics as they are.

OK, on the President Washington (later model), you can change R122 from a 1k to a higher value. You'll need to experiment to see what gives the best results. Using a 5k to 10k variable would give you some adjustment.
