I have a tech license, studying code for the upgrade....

Here's my take on the code requirement: It's hasn't been that hard to learn, but it's a waste of time. I think the only reason the requiremnet still exists in the U.S. is because the ITU requires it. Wait, there's one more reason: All those old fart hams that are on the test committee couldn't bear it if new hams didn't have to learn all of the outdated stuff that they had to learn. Heck, the rules are the rules, so we all gotta play by 'em to get the upgrades.....I just wonder what all those same folks would say if we required the same types of testing for Internet usage. Whaddya think folks? Increasingly difficult tests on the TCP/IP protocol stack and data communications to get more Internet priviledge? Oh yeah, and throw some punch card reading tests in there too.....that could be the CW equivalent. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/laugh.gif ALT=":lol">

I dont care for code and feel you should only be required to test for it if you want to do it. I also feel instead of having to learn code and be tested on it they should replace that part of the requirement for general and add test on propper operating procedure, emergency freq.s,etc. After listening for quite a while now,It seems more folks need to know good operating procedure than what a bunch of beeps mean. .--- ..- ... - / -- -.-- / --- .--. .. -. .. --- -. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/happy.gif ALT=":D">

UPDATE:

I went and took the General; passed both the written and the code easily. The code at 5wpm isn't as hard as you might think, but I still think it's outdated. I think a lot of the questions on the test are outdated, as well. Maybe someday something will change my mind.....

All that being said....They state the requirements up front for the General, so I guess it's all fair....the rules are the rules until we change 'em! Good luck!!

When you took the code test, what speed are the characters sent and what is the efective code speed (wpm). My thinking is if I`m going to listen to the code I would like to try it at the actual test speed.

Re: can we get a finger tapping a key icon now?

I think the easiest way to learn code now is listen to .475 lsb<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/happy.gif ALT=":D">
