I upgraded the firmware in my 5555N2 the other day, and last night it abruptly died. It just suddenly turned off for no reason. I was able to power it off and back on and it came back to life. Then a few minutes later it went off again. This time it took more than 5 minutes before it would come back to life. A few minutes later.....off again......and now it is totally dead, won't power up or anything. My lovely radio has become a brick. Did the upgrade do this in some way? Or does anybody have any idea what may have happened. Pez? Power is within spec at 13.9 volts.

Good thing my Cobra 148GTL is still as good as the day they made it!

The only part of your post that I liked was the last sentence. Sorry about you losing your 5555N2.
Let's hope that some ANYTONE software guy didn't add something to the firmware to cause it to conk out. Planned Obsolescence ??

I hope that it comes back to life, Sean. 73.

Thanks JJ.... I would almost feel better if I had actually been messing with it when it died; but to have it just blink out and die for no apparent reason while it's just sitting there receiving kinda burns me!

It's alive!! It turned out the radio was fine and the problem was the simplest of things......a wonky fuse holder in the power wire. I had been moving wiring around by the power supply earlier in the evening and probably pulled on it or something.
I replaced the fuse holder and fuse and she's up and running again. Phew!

What is the purpose and advantage of the upgrade? I have a new 5555Plus.

I'm glad you found the problem. (FYI - Firmware won't cause an issue like this in the QX built radios).

@unit_399 As for "planned obsolescence", that last firmware update for the AT-5555Nii long case was made for a radio they don't even build anymore, as a "thank you" to the "Pro" market who purchased many of that model. For the avoidance of any doubt, it is the exact opposite of "planned obsolescence". (y)

Hey Recon! As I remember it, the 5555+ was the first in the 5555 progression, and has a more traditional "CB" look. Then it became the 5555+N. It was later redesigned as the 5555N, which was upgraded as the 5555N2 (with the same appearance) and now there is the 5555N2 "short case" radio. The new short case version had upgraded firmware, which you can also install on the later versions of the original 5555N2. Hope I got all that correct LOL! Someone will come along and correct me if I'm wrong I'm sure!

TLDR: 5555N2 firmware upgrade is not compatible with 5555+ radio.

OK, thank you! That is comforting to know because I'm a "plug-n-play" type of guy and the thought of buying a new radio and having to do an upgrade would drive me nuts.
