For me, when it comes to HTs I want something that I can kick the crap out of and not feel bad about it.. Mobiles and base radios I want to be feature-packed, clean in terms of output and powerful. China has nothing that fits that bill.. yet.
The Wouxun and Quansheng HT radios, however, fit my requirements perfectly.. in fact I've gotten so many unsolicited complements on the signal quality of my Quansheng TG-UV2 that I don't think I'd buy anything else as far as an HT. Just read the reviews on eham.net.. they consistently outscore the vast majority of the "big three" options.
A consuming desire to avoid all things made in China would seem to me to make being a ham impossible.. even many the components you would use to build your own radio/amp are made in China.
