This female cardinal is building a nest in the crape myrtle right in front of my window. Her mate is helping her but he is camera shy.

Seeing this bird is on my bucket list. They say they have been viewed in my area in central Alberta but I have been waiting for 20 years to see one in my backyard.

We have a lot of those in Minnesota. They like millet and other small hard seeds. One time I couldn't get the oiled sunflower my chickadees like and went with a millet mix and those showed up.

We have a nesting pair here at the house in Nova Scotia every year. This year we noticed two females and one male so perhaps there are now two nesting pairs here.

For the longest time, I was under the impression Minnesota's two poisonous snakes were limited to the St. Croix river bluffs in the southeast portion of the state, but I have been hearing reports that they are back in northern Minnesota as well. Last timber rattler I saw was in Stillwater about 35 years ago, but now I hear they have been spotted in Cass and Itasca counties. I need to start being more careful. Up here, most people put absolutely no thought into watching for them. I think that is going to change soon, especially if we keep getting mild winters.

The timber rattler and the eastern Massasauga are the two in that area and this is the most current map. The timber rattlesnake is in decline in that area.

Yep, those maps fit what I remember. My grandma lived on the bluffs in stillwater and she often had them in the woods behind her house. That's the last place I saw one. I don't think those maps are accurate anymore though. I haven't seen them up here myself, but I have heard two separate reports that they are.

They can change and often do, but people don't report when they see a snake that doesn't belong and that's the whole battle of using maps. If folks would document and report them, maps would be more accurate.

We see plenty of Western rattlesnakes up here, so many that it's very common for people to train there dogs to avoid them to prevent snake bites.
They range from Baja California all the way up to Southern BC.
I can deal with snakes, been around them most my life, what I hate the most is damn scorpions, they love to hide in your clothes.
Last one got me on my arm, he was in my shirt sleeve when I put it on.....
Gotta empty out your boots if you leave them on the porch.
