not seen improvement with TR24 modified

most likely the reason the modulation meter isn't going all the way up without the limiter clipped is because you have the deadkey set at 1.5 watts.

you might try turning it back up to 4 watts and checking how it works.
if that is the cause, then it can be made to work at 1.5 watts, but that's a bit involved and not what this thread is about.

Handy Andy so for argument sakes i try what you suggested i started with 4.7k 10k, then 23k the higher i went the less of the movement when i apply audio. my 148 side mike has all the limiters intact and she swings like if the limiter is cut that's why i say there must be a bad part in the chain

C2000-AMC-ALC-direction.jpg

Early early Cobra 148's had a fixed resistor as R130 of 1.5k, like in the Uniden Madisons. Later C148's had this factory modification of taking R130 out, putting D64 and VR12 in it's place, Cathode (bar end) towards the VR, to match the Cobra 2000. Every Madison (and Washington/Cobra142 (different R number though)) I worked on, got this upgrade.

AMC does NOT react to positive going peaks, only to the negative going ones. Cutting or removing R131 will disable the AMC sense, but that allows the radio to overmodulate (negative peaks cutting off RF in between sylables), and you would have to turn the main Mic Gain control down to about 9 O'Clock, to keep from being distorted. This is per O'scope patterns. the AMC (and ALC in SSB) are nothing more, nothing less than Automatic Mic Gain controls.

Most of the people on the receiving end can't tell good audio from bad, they have been listening to distorted overbuzzdulated audio for years, thinking that is what "good" audio sounds like.

"Vreependerberv, vreep vreep vreependeberv"
"Yeah, sounds good!" ??!!??

ok here is an update because i like to let others know what fixed it or what made an improvement
i replace R131 with 222k ohms and i achieved what i was looking for to have the same amount of upper swing that R131 gives you when you clip it which was 2 watts dead key swinging to 7 1/2
and now with R131 modified 2 watts dead key swinging to 5 watts but all limiter are intact
later on, I'll look for the missing 2 1/2 watts LOL

hey loosecannon i receive the 105 caps today 1st I had to take the transformer mod that I was using on both the 148 gtl and the 2000 gtl on the 148 I lost like 3 watts going from the transformer to the cap i had it doing 9 watts RMS now with cap 6 watts RMS but I notice the audio seems louder with the cap mod and clear when listening to it on another radio .on the 2000 i got it doing 6 1/2 watts RMS from 2 watts dead key
and the same audio seems louder too and clear and by the way, let me say a big THANK YOU for letting me know about that mod looking at the pic that is the right spot where the caps go right .?? so i'm pretty happy with the results not next project 29 ltd classic
