Two ways to save a buck on Bird elements.
If you only care about 27 MHz you can use the "A" type element meant to cover 25 to 60 MHz. They cost roughly half the price of the 2-30 MHz "H" element for the same power rating. And if you care about ham bands below 27 MHz, that's just more expensive.
Second, you can buy the second-source elements made by Coaxial Dynamics. They tend to cost between half and two-thirds the price of the same Bird brand element.

When you move the meter around the shack turn the slug so the arrow is pointing up. That will short meter movement and keep the needle from getting banged around.
It's also good to mention that to the seller if you buy one online. They make a solid aluminum slug for this also.
