Ordered an FT-891, ATAS 120 and Diamond 400S mount from a big dealer in Ohio. Took my time and installed the mount on my trunk lip. Got the rig setup where I wanted it, then grabbed the ATAS box.

Once I opened the box, I noticed the antenna base was outside of the little cardboard inserts and the plastic bag was torn open. The instructions were ripped apart. Once I tightened down the whip, I noticed the weatherproof cap was missing.

Somewhere along it's journey from Japan, someone pilferered that cap. I called the dealer and informed them. They said I'd either be sent a cap or they'd send another antenna out. Did a quick web search for a cap. Only thing that came up is one in England for $10 and shipping brought it to $30. Not paying that.

I hate when stuff like that happens. Makes me feel like they don't believe me. I just molded some coax seal tape in it's place. I put a couple ground straps on my trunk hinges. Anyhow, the antenna tunes just fine and I'm HF mobile again after several years absence.

Blasted pilfering fools.

Wasn't R&L. I should have went with them. I would have saved quite a bit of money. They have excellent prices with free shipping over $100.
Most places for buying ham gear do. I usually stick with HRO but they are just down in Portland and I am in Seattle so shipping is very fast, sometimes next day.
DX Engineering is also very good and sometimes Gigaparts.

Sorry to hear you had this problem, it shouldn't happen with new gear ever!
Back in the 70s I bought a new Henry Radio Tempo one and the power supply from a local ham gear shop late in the day on a Saturday. I got it all home and unboxed it only to find there was no power cable between the rig and the power supply! By then they were closed and they weren't open again till Tuesday. BAH!! I had the octal connectors so soldered together a cable from the schematic. That got me through the weekend.
Stuff happens even when it really shouldn't!!

That would have been a real drag. Nothing like getting something you really want, only to find out something is wrong.

In my younger years, my OCD would have gotten the best of me. In my older age, I'm a little mellower now. This would have been an emergency situation back then. Instead, I just plopped on some coax seal to keep water out. Looks like crap and bugs me, but it's working For me, it's mostly the principal of the matter.
