I've seen the freq display for replacing the clock, but I have no plan to add freqs to it, so I don't see the point.
instead, I am debating going this route-

it's a 95$ part, but it's pretty cool looking...
these 3 displays are all one unit, so I'll get all 3 effects.

First of all consider the fact that a radio's audio spectrum is very limited. So what is the point to add this to a radio that will only talk 4khz wide (at best) and likewise with the receive?
Kinda neat; but ultimately useless . . .

I would go with the freq counter mounted in a small project box that can be plugged into the radio. I wouldn't hack up a nice classic if it's in good shape and all is working. JMO, god bless.

who's talking about hacking anything? the hole is already there.
and the radio isn't currently working either.

as I said, no interest in a freq counter. if I was going with an external box I'd be considering something like this...

or maybe

but the radio is big enough as is, and it's a small space, so I'm looking for something I can fit into the clock opening. the clock is the analog version and it still works so I plan on setting it aside.
without cutting up the radio.

There are two types of folks in this world there are the Power window/door lock Ac & Big stereo cruise control type and there are the crank up window, AM radio, 75X2 air, manual door lock 3 on the tree pull out the hand throttle type. Your the first type and I'm the second I say leave the Clock. It is obvious your mind is made up you just want someone to agree with your decision so you feel better. Just do what makes ya happy after all it is YOUR radio.

that's the plan sideways. like I said, I'm not planning on hacking it up, just hacking it.
I kind of like this, and it's quite a bit cheaper, but I don't know if it would fit without chopping up the radio.

there are some cool looking VU meters I'm considering, like that one. and they're usually a lot cheaper . even cheaper if I get a kit.

umm, no, I don't have my mind made up as far as modding it. and I certainly don't need anyones opinion other than my own to feel good about myself and/or my decisions. especially about something like a radio.
the only reason I posted this is to contribute to the forum and share something I think looks pretty cool, not for an ego boost.
even if I don't mod it I will disconnect the clock to preserve the function. I don't need it, so why run it and wear it out?

as far as the two types of people...
I run a big stereo with a 12 band parametric equalizer - the better to hear it while on the expressway with the windows down, could care less if my doors have power windows or locks, have no cruise control, and love driving a stick shift.
so out of your criteria that makes you different than me, only one is different, the rest are the same...

Okay, now I get it. And yes if the radio isn't working then go for it! I thought we were speaking of a working virgin radio. An accurate freq counter that will work on ssb would be nice. I say go for it!

Loosecanon has one of the nicest Madison's I've ever seen. Granted it's the only one I've ever seen moded and it was posted in picture form by loosecanon . I actually sent loosecanon a p.m. about doing to my Madison what he did to his. That was before I opened the box that contained my Madison. It was so mint. Not a scratch on it. The two Madison speakers and black finished d104 were also just as mint. So i had a problem. I purchased it after a long search and it was to be my only ssb rig (besides a Browning mk lV and lll that imo aren't up to par on ssb) well it was an easy decision for me. I. Left it as it was born, as everyone knows it's difficult to operate ssb now a days without unlocking your clarified. I'm not that big of a ssb guy and prefer am. Even thought it's the only non tube rig I own and always preferred the audio of a tube rig to a transistorized rig at least on am, I've found the Madison getting excellent reports on am. I can't even bring myself too unlock the clarifier. I just might get another Madison. Maybe one already with the modifications. Like all the rigs I own this one will stay stock.

mines not mint, no major damage but plenty of scratches and some wear. some shipping damage too.
what is loosecannon's mod?
please don't say frequency counter...

It does have the blue led frequency counter but it also has every modification that one can do to a Madison. Check it out. Search either loosecannon or madison in the search fourm.
