Pro 2005 deaf on UHF

I have just aquired the pro 2005 scanner. Compared to my other scanners, it is somewhat deaf on UHF. VHF works well. I have tried several different antennas with little improvement.
Any suggestions for a fix?
 

Strangely enough, when experimenting with modes, I found that UHF on WFM, produced really good reception. The signal was clear and strong, and with less background noise. This radio has been modified for complete coverage between 760-1300Mhz and I was thinking maybe the programming change has caused the filters to swap on UHF. Needless to say, I now use WFM on UHF only, for good reception. Has anyone noticed this occurance when the mod was done?

    Is it possible to be on a lake and have a homing directional beam being emitted from the shore so a person could navigate to that beam's source? For example at night to a jetty.
