Hello there, and thanks for asking my opinion.

Well, what mode are you going to be using the radio on mainly? A few suggestions come to mind, although before making one, I would like to find out what the main application is going to be. Also, is it going to be used in a mobile? This is important too, because of ignition noise, and board design. (certain radios are notorious for cold solder joints later in life) Get back to me, and I'll tell you what I think.

In this case, if you're after a "CB" style radio, or a "glorified" CB style radio, I would recommend either the Galaxy 95T, or the RCI-2970DX if you're operating for SSB than AM. Although.. "nudge" nudge" (saying in a convincing type of way) the Icom 706MK II G is a all around better radio, and 100 times the capability. And when you concider all of the features, and warranty, stability, and QUALITY that you'll enjoy for years to come, the small increase in cost is worth it...and think about it, if you're a ham, or thinking about becomming one, you get all of HF and can talk around the world, 2 meters, and 440mhz. The radio is just superior to any export radio out there. Oh yeah, and for a "ham style" radio, they sound really good on AM!!

Take care,

Justin

I hope so, keep in mind it's just my opinion, ultimately, get a radio that you will be happy with. My opinion is based on personal experience and actually seeing the radios on the bench.

I have this radio. The AM sounds really good. I drive by the truck stop and key up for a radio check on 19 and guys just say "wow". It's NOT one of those big echo, splattering sounding AM radios....it's just clean and strong.

You don't "tune" the kind of rigs in the same sense that you do with CB's or Exports. You simply just get it great out of the box, and you don't want to mess with it (unless you're going to mod it for 11m and do the famous fan mod). These are completely different kind of radios from CB's and Exports and you use them as they are. It does 40 watts on AM right out of the box. It also has a built in speech compression if you want to use it that will give you a little more "punch".

It works fine on 11m

Ruggedness? I use one in my Jeep Wrangler, and I 4x4 with it. No problems yet. It has really extreme weather ratings, too.

For the mic, I would just leave it with the stock eletret condenser mic. The radio has a built in, adjustable speech processor that you can mess with to get it to suit your requirements. My only complaint about the mic is that I wish it was a noise cancelling mic. To give you the idea on how good the audio is on this radio, I leave the mic gain down at 1 all the time on AM/SSB/and FM and I still get full ALC.

This radio truly has a ton of features. It is a really great price for everything you get in a radio. My only suggestion is to also get the FL-223 narrow ssb filter also. It's an extra $100, but WHAT A HUGE DIFFERENCE on ssb.

I've included a link to the features:

Ok, now that I've answered all that instead of Justin, he can put in his two cents..

If you had to choose, what is the best current production " export " radio ?

Do any of them have good receive ( not to noisy ) ? Don't drift off freq. ( like my p.o.s. Galaxy 88 ) Have good clean audio on AM, SSB & FM ( clean not over-modulated trucker loud ) ?

Thanks

Shawn
