My "cheap-down & dirty" radio mount!
"Goal" : Your radio's mounting bracket screwed to a PVC "T" connector w/a short nipple on the bottom leg which can be inserted into a connector on a length of PVC permanently mounted in the vehicle. This allows you to quickly mount & dismount your radio over & over again such as for security reasons.
1- PVC pipe (I used 3/4" diameter)
1- "T" connector - same size
2- end caps - same size
1- connector - same size
2- hex head self tapping screws sized for the holes on your radio mount bracket
Gorilla glue
1) Cut 2 "nipples" of the pipe of a length that when inserted into the horizontal portion of the "T" & capped with the "end caps", the double thickness of the "end caps" plus "nipples" lines up with the two holes on your radio's mounting bracket that you'll use to screw it to the "T".
Cut a third nipple 2" long & insert it in the "leg" of the "T". (This "nipple" will be inserted in the connector which will be on the "base" portion of your mount).
"Dry fit" everything to verify it all fits the way you want, take it back apart & glue all joints w/Gorilla Glue.
2) Use self tapping hex head screws of the type that look like they have a built in flat washer to screw your mount to the "T" assembly (drill pilot holes, of course) & I promise you there'll be no "rocking" even though it's mounted to a round surface.
So that's the radio potion of your mount.
3) Now you have to decide how you want to permanently mount the "base" portion of your mount to your vehicle. The "base' basicaly consists of a length of PVC w/the connector glued to the top into which you insert the leg ("nipple") of the radio portion.
Example: Make your version of the pedestal mounts available online. Have a length of PVC attached to a seat mounting bolt/bracket on the floor next to the console with an angle bracket @ the bottom & attached to the console @ the top. I have several ideas on attaching to the console from literally drilling a hole to screw the PVC to it, to using double sided tape in order to NOT put holes in your console or whatever. If you need ideas PM me here, describe your situation & I'll do my best to help.
I can tell you this, if you mount the "base" solidly, you'll end up with a solid mounting for your radio(s).
I know this because I have a Yeticom Optima w/a Kenwood TM-281A piggy-backed on top mounted this way in the corner of a plastic tote sitting in my passenger seat w/bungee cord holding the tote in place. Makes it real handy having both of them at my right hand!
