The 2980 is a multi-band RCI design, and uses a PNP transistor for the AM modulator/carrier control. A big one.

Thanks for the tip on the replacement parts. It does have a 1419 for an AM modulator. It wasn't secured to the case when I got the radio, so it may be a bad part already. I'll find out soon enough.On the older type radios you're working on, if they have the 1419 regulator in it, then I'd toss that thang as far as I could and install an 1135 or 6487g.
