I have been out of the 11 meter hobby for thirty plus years now but like to browse EBay for the older grear. I keep seeing certain radios fetch higher prices and I always wonder why. I know Tram, CPI, Stoner, etc pull in the big dollars but GE? Why is this sideband mobile valuable? Is it really that good or did people lose their mind?IMG_20250714_094949.jpg

This is a very good radio from the good old days. It has the same board as the Lafayette Telsat SSB 140. The 3-5825B version is the same as the GE Super Base minus many of its features. So, yep, it's a good radio and probably worth a few extra bucks.

I always heard the Super base was a pile of Junk, maybe I was misinformed.
The Superbase was a very good radio back in the day. It would easily be equal to the Cobra 2000 except it did not have a frequency counter and may be a little harder to add channels if you were into that. They are also highly collectable. The real issue with the Superbase was that they are hard to work on. They have 2 boards in them and one of the boards is an early double sided board. Personally, I would take a Superbase over a Cobra 2000 mainly because it was the popular radio in its day (when I was young) and I think they look great. Plus they are a lot more rare than a 2000. Don't get me wrong here, the 2000 is a great radio as well.

I bought a GE Super Base 2-3 years ago and love that radio. It receives well and sounds good and is still on frequency transmitting. I like the 2 antenna hook ups on the back so you can run a vertical or a beam. It is the 1 radio I would consider paying for a complete over-haul if I had to & it looks great also ! Just my humble opinion.

Emphasis on "back in the day". This one just did not age well. People loved its performance, especially on sideband. Reversing decades of deterioration wasn't part of their picture 45 years ago. .

Unless you find one NIB expect Murphy. Probably won't take long for the NIB radio to 'remember' how old it is when electrolytic caps fall by the wayside.

But is it possible for a experienced technician to restore this radio ? Of coarse at a premium !

I had a 5825B. It had some intermittent issues that could not be resolved although it had been to a few shops. The double board made it a little more difficult to repair. I think Mikes Radio had a video on it, or was it the earlier 5825.
I wish I had found someone to fix it as I liked the look and somewhat compactness of the radio. If i remember correct, it did have good receive.

For the record, I have a 13-5825B myself, that has intermittents. I have not tried to fix the double board (double trouble) yet. Maybe someday...
